German Becomes Ultimate Warrior
Over
the weekend, an epic prank was pulled off in one of China's most revered and
protected sites--the burial ground of the
Terracotta
Warriors. A 26 year-old German art student, Pablo Wendel, visited
the Xi'an museum Saturday morning. He brought with him a bag
containing a costume identical to the dress of the warriors and a pedestal
similar to those on which the warriors stand. Once Wendel entered the
excavation site, he changed into his costume, jumped into the tomb, and
blended in with the 8,099 standing clay statues. Wendel stood motionless for
almost 5 minutes next to the relics until state police monitoring the site
noticed him. Surprisingly, the student was not arrested though he was
given a stern Chinese-language lecture by security. Wendel,
reportedly, was obsessed with the story of the Terracotta Warriors and his
stunt was an attempt to be the first recruit into the
Qin Dynasty army in
over 2,200 years. The warriors were buried in 220 B.C. and were
discovered in 1974 by peasants digging a well in Xi'an. The warriors
are widely considered to be the most important archaeological find of the
20th century. And if you ask me, Wendel's feat should be considered
one of the finest pranks of the 21st.
